What We Do?

Dawn Humanitarian and Development Organization (DHDO)

Dawn Humanitarian and Development Organization (DHDO) is a national, women-led, non-governmental, and impartial organization with a strong operational presence in the Eastern, Central, and Northern regions of Afghanistan

DHDO works with vulnerable and crisis-affected communities across Afghanistan to improve livelihoods, strengthen climate resilience, empower women, expand access to education and skills, improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), enhance food security and agriculture, and support civil society development. Through integrated humanitarian and development programs, DHDO promotes sustainable solutions that reduce vulnerability, build community resilience, and support inclusive and long-term development.

Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment

We empower communities, including women, returnees, IDPs, and other vulnerable groups, by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities and promoting entrepreneurship. Through vocational training, support of SMEs, access to markets, financial literacy, and income-generating initiatives, we help individuals build financial independence, recover from crises, and achieve long-term economic resilience. By strengthening local economies, we aim to reduce poverty, create employment, and enhance community self-reliance.

Climate Action & Disaster Risk Reduction

We support communities in preparing for and adapting to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. Our programs include community-based disaster risk reduction, climate-resilient infrastructure, environmental protection, and capacity-building initiatives. By targeting vulnerable populations, including crisis-affected communities and women-led households, we help protect lives, livelihoods, and critical assets while promoting sustainable environmental practices that build long-term resilience.

Women’s Empowerment & Social Protection

We promote gender equality and social inclusion by empowering women economically, and socially. Our initiatives provide women, particularly those in crisis-affected or marginalized communities, with leadership training, access to financial resources, and safe spaces for dialogue. We support social protection measures to reduce vulnerability, strengthen family and community cohesion, and foster inclusive cooperation, enabling women to actively contribute to sustainable development and social stability.

Education & Skills Development

We empower children, youth, and adults through access to quality education and skill-building programs. Our initiatives include inclusive learning opportunities, literacy programs, vocational and technical skills training, life skills and digital education, and safe, engaging learning environments.

By focusing on comprehensive education programs, we help learners gain essential knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and practical skills. These programs foster personal growth, build confidence, and encourage active participation in their communities. From early childhood to youth development, we ensure education is equitable, meaningful, and transformative for everyone, including the most marginalized.

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)S

We strengthen health, dignity, and resilience by providing access to safe water, improved sanitation, and effective hygiene practices for crisis-affected and vulnerable populations. Our WASH interventions are designed to reduce waterborne diseases, improve nutrition, and support sustainable, resilient communities.

Our programs reach displaced families, returnees, high-need rural and urban areas, and vulnerable schools and health facilities. We implement context-appropriate solutions such as community water points, improved latrines, handwashing stations, and menstrual hygiene resources, all designed to be safe, inclusive, and sustainable.

By combining infrastructure improvements with community-led behavior change, our trained male and female facilitators promote hygiene awareness, safe water handling, sanitation maintenance, and inclusive WASH practices. This approach helps build healthier, more resilient, and equitable communities where everyone can thrive.

Food Security & Agriculture:

DHDO improves food security, nutrition, and agricultural resilience for vulnerable, displaced, and crisis-affected households across Afghanistan. Our work ensures families have consistent access to safe, nutritious food while strengthening their ability to cope with shocks and rebuild sustainable livelihoods.

We promote climate-smart and resilient agriculture, supporting farmers with crop diversification, improved soil and water management, and the use of drought-tolerant and high-yield crop varieties adapted to local conditions. DHDO also advances women-led home gardening, improving household dietary diversity and empowering women as active contributors to food production.

We also construct and rehabilitate community irrigation systems, water management structures, and small-scale agricultural infrastructure that increase productivity and expand cultivable land.

Aligned with global and national FSAC priorities, DHDO targets IDPs, returnees, host communities, and food-insecure households. Through practical training delivered by skilled agricultural facilitators, we equip communities with the knowledge and tools needed to adopt sustainable practices and improve long-term resilience.
